INTERVIEW: IN CONVERSATION WITH EIVØR
Interview by Cecilia Pattison-Levi
For all those fans of Eivør Pálsdóttir, the acclaimed Faroese singer-songwriter and sonic alchemist known for her ethereal voice and genre-defying music, is coming to Australia in March.
Eivør bewitched Australian audiences in 2024 when she toured with the amazing Heilung and performed some side shows at The Brightside here in Brisbane. She is returning to our shores on an exciting 5-date tour with Norwegian singer-songwriter Sylvaine. And for those fans in Brisbane, the wonderful Princess Theatre is the place to be to hear Eivør push her creative boundaries.
“I loved touring Australia,” exclaimed Eivør. “I will never forget that thunderstorm and the rain at Riverstage. It was wild. I didn’t expect there to be an audience for my music in Australia as I come from so far away. But the audiences were huge. It was a dream of mine to be in Australia and share music with fans. And now I get to do it again. I want to see the crazy animals there – you are all so calm about them. Like Icelanders with volcanoes: they just go – oh yeah – they do that thing with the earthquakes and the lava and they sit like right next to it - as we all freak out! Mind you the sounds in nature like that bring you strange melodies – I hear them in my head”.
Eivør’s music has such a distinctive, and signature distinct sound, with her blend of folk, Nordic traditions, and contemporary electronic influences. She has a devoted following and her live performances are mesmerizing with music that transcends boundaries.
“I am working on new music now,” explained Eivør. “I have an album almost ready and it’s going well. I am working on it every day. It’s taking shape and I hope to finish it over the next two months. If we finish it before coming over to Australia, that would be lovely”.
“But I am unsure about what I will perform in Australia,” declared Eivør. “I like my setlists to be a musical journey. I love making them. I am brewing it in my mind. Some older music I haven’t played for a long time – I would like to do that. I have such an extensive back catalogue and I would like to share that with fans. I have been making music since I was a teenager. I want to play tracks of ‘Enn’ as well and maybe some music from ‘The Last Kingdom’ – it matches in with my music. We will see how it comes together”.
Eivør has a special guest on this 2026 tour. Her name is Sylvaine and she is an innovative Norwegian musician: a multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer who plays with musical forms such as post-metal, ambient, and shoegaze.
“I first toured with Sylvaine last year in Europe, Canada and the US and we just clicked,” said Eivør. “She is so much fun to be with and she has a great sense of humour and we share the same values. I think the fans who come to the show will love hearing her as she is doing something rare, a solo set. It will be a wonderful experience”.
Eivør and her pioneering music will just be the tonic in these crazy times.
“I am lucky,” she mused. “I am at that point of my life when I am sure about myself – I have set myself free and matured - and I know what I don’t want. That’s important! But we are living in these crazy times – the world is crazy. I want my music to take that craziness away and bring in back – embrace change - but good change”.
“I just can’t wait to share my music with people in Australia. For me, the most beautiful aspect of touring or performing as a musician, is the live experience. When I get to share the music and songs in person, it makes me happy” stated Eivør. “The real magic and the energy happen during live shows because no two performances are the same. It’s where you witness all this diversity in life. I see all these different people, places and cultures and music fans from metal, folk, electronica and new age. That’s the beauty of touring for me. There are no walls between us, and the world needs that today. I’m so grateful to be able to share music and these moments with people who love and value live music”.
If you love and value live music, Eivør and Sylvaine should not be missed. Just ask anyone at the sold-out Brightside concert: how good was Eivør’s concert? Stunning!
