LIVE REVIEW: RECKLESS COAST @ THE BRIGHTSIDE 20/09/25
Words by Cecilia Pattison-Levi
Brisbane based band Reckless Coast released a new song, the hard rockin’ ‘Addictions’, and to celebrate its release the band had a live launch event at The Brightside on 20 September 2025.
It’s great that Reckless Coast are continuing to release new music. The three-piece band of Jaeden Ogston (vocals), India Raine (bass) and Jono Frowd (drums) deliver a great traditional rock’n’roll sound with a fresh take on the 1970s and 1980s Australian pub rock sound, centred around swaggering melodic guitar riffs and stadium worthy choruses, replete with tuneful hooks and big grooves.
I really like Reckless Coast: their sound and what they are trying to do with their music. It’s honest and the band are terrific fun live and their rock aesthetic is tight. I have seen them three times this year and their gigs are always dynamic and entertaining. The gig at The Brightside saw the band kick off with their awesome song ‘People Piss Me Off’ – I love it! And, then, they played their other great songs from last year’s impressive debut EP ‘Naked And Famous’ such as ‘Runnin’’, ‘Burn Street’ and ‘Bad Habits’.
The live show had everything sweaty musicians, glitter, paper aeroplanes being flown into the drum kit, a guy called Jonty trying to grab at Jaeden Ogston guitar and gentiles’ or India Raine bass guitar. The drummer, Jono Frowd, was safe in the kit except for those paper planes. Jaeden Ogston left the stage to down a beer (bitter) that ended up all over him. Before he played his guitar solo lying on the floor in the beer, then he got up and continued to play to people in the crowd, stuck to a wall and to the guys at the merch desk.
Reckless Coast also played older songs like ‘Ambers’, ‘In A Daze’, ‘Kathleen’, an affecting delivery of ‘London’ and ‘Gossip’. The solo acoustic rock ballad ‘Dying Town’ was wonderfully performed. But the night was all about the launch of ‘Addictions’.
Reckless Coast’s ‘Addictions’ has a more driving sound with a big drum blast beat running through the song. The drums are really prominent as they tie into a tight bassline groove and a definite sharp guitar riff. The melody is still there in the song’s big chorus and electric guitar. The song was written by front man Jaeden Ogston and it explores the psychological toll of romantic dependency. He delivered the song with real energy and his fantastic rock voice.
It was great to see and hear the song delivered live as it joins the band’s other great tracks. The Reckless Coast really have something good going on with their classic rock sound and energetic live shows. Tune in, or better still, catch a show and support this young band before they are stadium fillers. Their music deserves to be heard.
