August Burns Red returned to The Tivoli for the Brisbane stop of their Season Of Surrender tour. Their first Australian headline run in seven years brought I Promised The World, The Gloom In The Corner and Fallweather along for a night of metalcore and post hardcore.

Melbourne’s Fallweather opened with melodic vocals, heavier screams and plenty of energy. Their sound combines early 2000s post hardcore influences with modern metal, and that mix worked well live. ‘Mourn’ got the crowd going with a circle pit before ‘Beneath the Dirt’ slowed things down for a more emotional moment.

“Enough sad shit. I need you to kill each other,” vocalist Cullen Forbes announced afterwards. His verdict on Brisbane shifted between a seven out of ten and “easily the best show of the tour”. With “We’re not fucken done” ringing out from the stage, there was still plenty of energy left in the room.

The Gloom In The Corner brought a heavier, more theatrical sound. Deep screams and melodic vocals cut through the riffs, with big breakdowns giving the crowd plenty to work with. The Melbourne band’s storytelling gives their music a dramatic edge, and that came through in their performance.

“Mosh has been excellent. I know we can do better,” vocalist Mikey Arthur told the room. By the final song, he was encouraging the crowd to give security something to do. There were some delicious breakdowns in that set.

From the second I Promised The World stepped onstage, the energy went straight to 100. The Texas outfit sounded raw and frantic, combining screamed and clean vocals with melodic guitars and keyboards underneath. Their post hardcore and screamo influences brought a different feel to the night while keeping the intensity high. It was my first time seeing them, and they’ve converted me.

Their keyboardist was especially hard to miss, jumping and rolling around on the ground during the set. The band powered through their songs with occasional breaks to talk to the crowd, sharing how much they had enjoyed the tour. For their first visit to Australia, I Promised The World found a Brisbane crowd ready to match their energy.

Then came August Burns Red, backed by an insane light show. Their sound was heavy but clear, giving the intricate guitar work and powerful drumming room to be heard. Jake Luhrs’ vocals cut through it all, while the band moved between melodic passages and breakdowns with precision.

The new material worked well alongside the older songs, with the melodic guitar work coming through clearly even in the heavier sections. August Burns Red sounded tight throughout, and the crowd were loving it.

Jake Luhrs encouraged anyone who had never crowd surfed to give it a go during ‘Exhumed’. Crowd surfers kept security busy, with even someone dressed as Super Mario making a trip overhead.

Towards the end, Matt Greiner’s drum solo was a standout, putting the power and control behind those songs firmly in the spotlight. ‘White Washed’ closed the night with one last wall of death, and Brisbane still had enough left to get involved.

Not a bad way to spend a Sunday night.
