INTERVIEW: VINDICTA IN CONVERSATION WITH AMBER MALDONADO
Interview by Cecilia Pattison-Levi
VindictA is a band that is six months old. It was born from the wreckage of the surrounding the chaos, drama, controversy and implosion of Dutch metallic metalcore band Dogma. Looking forward, VindictA have formed themselves into a band, they have started writing their own songs and they are ready to bring the Reckoning Australian Tour to Australia. VindictA commence their tour in Adelaide and will head to Brisbane on 28 June at the Crowbar for the band’s first ever visits to these Australian cities.
With members based in Italy, the United States and Spain, VindictA operates as an international musical project with a global vantage point. The VindictA project has been officially created by Grace Jane Pasturini (vocals), Amber Maldonado (guitar), and Patri Grief (guitar) and the rhythm section has been completed by Wena Velasco (bass) and Gemma Sofia Salvatori (drums).
“It’s great to have our new band rounded out,” explained the talented multi-instrumentalist Amber Maldonado. “We know we wanted to be a five-piece band. Hopefully, in the future, we may add some keys – synths – as we think that will fully complete VindictA”.
“VindictA has given us a new creative license to be ourselves,” stated Amber Maldonado. “There will be no more scripted performances or odd costumes that are a bit ick. We will be keeping the authentic parts and theatrical personas, but we will design our own costumes now. It is great to weave part of ourselves into our characters. With Lamia (a child-devouring demoness and vampiric seductress in ancient Greek mythology), I am able to design my stage clothes with symbolism of the snake. I really like snakes and the design and music we are making are being brought together”.
The band recently released their debut single, ‘The Face of the Clown’, that blends heavy guitar riffs, cinematic atmospheres and strong melodic hooks. The song has garnered an excellent response from fans and has marked the first step in establishing VindictA's own musical identity. They will be playing this new song on the tour.
“We took the impact of the Dogma drama and to say our part – we turned it into a song – our song,” said Amber Maldonado. “Next week we are releasing a new video. We have started working on an album that we are aiming to release by the end of the year. We have been lucky enough to gain the blessing of our songwriter (Alvaro Rabaquino) and can still perform those songs that we will do on tour”.
VindictA have promised to deliver a powerful and emotionally charged setlist.
“We will be performing a mix of songs,” mused Amber Maldonado. “Well, we won’t be dressed as nuns anymore. But our love of heavy metal will remain”. The religious imagery around the band runs deep, but the band have very different religious perspectives.
“We have a broad Christian type of faith in the band and we salute religion with humour,” explained Amber Maldonado. “I was a Sunday school teacher with a love for heavy metal. I was told it was devil’s music and evil. Religion is full of hypocrisy and we want to expose it through our lyricism, strong performances, costumes and storytelling”.
VindictA’s performances in Australia will be worth seeing. It will be their first ever tour here as free musicians. The band has songs loaded with meaning and paired with their experience, creative freedom and ambition it gives them something powerful to say to fans and the music industry.
VindictA is turning a new chapter in their story: it’s based on solid musical skill, forward-looking and international ambition.
