INTERVIEW: NASTY IN CONVERSATION WITH PATRICK ‘PADDY’ GAJDZIK

Interview by Cecilia Pattison-Levi

No Barriers caught up with Patrick ‘Paddy’ Gajdzik guitarist from the iconic hardcore punk band Nasty

Nasty’s journey from a small town in Belgium to the international hardcore punk stage is a testament to their passion for music and resilience over the last 21 years. With each album, tour, and performance, Nasty have maintained a raw, aggressive, unyielding “brutal” sound that resonates with hardcore punk and death metal fans around the world.

“Well,” said Paddy. “We are aggro-punk! Come to the show. See what we do. Listen to the music. And, come and talk to us after the show. We really want to let the experiences sink in”.

It will be Nasty’s first ever visit to Australian shores. “We had a gig planned a few years ago – way before COVID-19 – but it never happened,” stated Paddy. “Now. We are coming to Australia. All of us are excited to see the country and meet the people. It’s always been on the bucket list! We can’t wait and we are touring with our friends Paleface Swiss and it will be good to be together. It will be a great experience for fans to get that brutal hardcore fix”.

Nasty comprises of “the lyrics man” Matthias “Matthi” Tarnath (vocals), Berislaw “Berry” Audenaerd (bass), Christian “Nash” Fritz (drums) and “me Patrick “Paddy” Gajdzik playing guitar.” Nasty love hard riffs with their venomous guitar, thundering rhythms and powerful drumming which are the mainstays of their sound. “Our music is heavy hardcore with a brutal death metal edge,” explained Paddy. “We record like we play - organically. We like to be spontaneous in the studio. We just jump in and jam. Sometimes we doodle around and send each other ideas, but we have friends with studios and we just usually find somewhere to play and record. The riffs start and it’s a little bit of ‘this’ and ‘that’ and we see what happens”.

Nasty are known for their dedication to the hardcore music scene and they have a no-compromise attitude to playing live. “We love it!” said Paddy. “We like give 110% when we play live. We are so grateful to do this. We love playing live punk hardcore with big beatdowns. Even though we have been together for 21 years now, we don’t take it for granted. We go hard at every show – it’s what we are about aggro-punk. Fans can expect us to be really energetic, crazy and we are going to have a mix of new and older tracks just for Australia and we are working on a new song just for the tour”.

With eight albums and their new EPBlack My Heart’, Nasty has consistently delivered great music true to their vision and dedicated to their aggressive sound. Their albums likeDeclaring War’, ‘Love’, ‘Shokka’, and the excellentRealigion’ from 2017 showcase their evolution and aggressive style. “The new EP is a bit like one of our older albums ‘Realigion’ as we have features on it. Our friend Marc “Zelli” Zellweger (from Paleface Swiss) does some great vocals on ‘Talk’ and on ‘Iron Grip’ Terror front man Scott Vogel joined us to get that brutal sound”.

Nasty have solidified their place in the Belgian and international hardcore scene with their hectic live performances and through their records. “We are just about to go into the studio this week. We want to bring a new song on tour with us. We are thinking about starting to write an album for next year as well,” exclaimed Paddy. “We don’t know yet – will it be an EP like ‘Black My Heart’ or an LP? We will see what happens. We try to keep it simple and stay true to our sound”.

If you want to see and hear some of the best hardcore aggro-punk with a side of death metal – then the Nasty and Paleface Swiss Australian tour sounds like the guys who will: “make you lose your shit in the pit”. So, grab some real estate at the Princess Theatre and get ready to thrash!
