SINGLE REVIEW: “MY WAY” BY WAVE RAIDERS

Review by Cecilia Pattison-Levi

Sunshine Coast, Caloundra based, punker rockers Wave Raiders have released a new singleMy Way’. The track starts with a drum kick and a big distorted electric guitar as it announces that a punk rock statement about charting your own way in life is about to be made. Then, the bassline and a crisp electric guitar drive into the rhythm that brings in the vocals and delivers the young trio’s song.

My Way’ is a declaration of youthful independence as they “do it my way” by “moving forward” and “breaking all the rules” and they map their way in life by “going to the top” and have hope in the future “it will end all fine” just as long as you are true to yourself and don’t follow the others. Wave Raiders have released two other singles ‘Don’t Wanna Be Late' and ‘Fun’ that bring more of their punk rock tinged with surf rock sounds.

Wave Raiders ‘My Way’ was written by all three members of the band: Peter De Waard, Thomas De Waard and Jayden Georg (age collectively around 14 to 15 years old). It is a testament to how they want to make music by writing original songs. It was produced and recorded by internationally renowned UK producer Steve James at Red Engine Studios, Brisbane. He has captured the young band’s enthusiasm, their youthful spirit and how they play live.

Wave Raiders will be celebrating the launch of their single by throwing an all-ages gig at the Sunshine Coast’s Solbar (Maroochydore) on Sunday, 17 August with punk rock legends, Chamberlane, and up-and-coming grunge rockers, Sunshine Coast band Karma Police.

I have seen both the Wave Raiders and Karma Police perform this year. If you like to be onboard with bands before they become famous, then these two young bands are worth following as they carve their own paths in music with great punk attitudes that's full of do-it-yourself zing, zip and unconcealed excitement. This Solbar gig will certainly be worth catching.

So, let the young raiders steal you away as you hitch on their wave!
