C.O.F.F.I.N SIGN TO P(DOOM) & SHARE NEW SINGLE & VIDEO ‘SLEEP IN IT’
Sydney Northern Beaches rock'n'roll band C.O.F.F.I.N (Children Of Finland Fighting In Norway) return with new single and video 'Sleep In It' and announce their signing to p(doom) Records. Home to the family of projects from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and friends, the signing marks a fitting new chapter for a band that has spent two decades building one of the most uncompromising and respected careers in Australian rock'n'roll.
Alongside new music, the band has also shared the trailer for their forthcoming documentary, 10,000 Miles From Oslo(presented by Up) and announced a run of international film premiere screenings across Australia, Europe, UK and North America.
Produced by Declan Mehrtens (Amyl and The Sniffers), with vocals co-produced by Jason Whalley (Frenzal Rhomb), the new single 'Sleep In It', captures the emotional fallout of distance and disconnection. Speaking about the track, they share, "It's about the consequence of a lopsided life and a longing for relationships with yourself and others to feel nourished and full. Fronting the fields you've failed to tend to."
Filmed by Will de Monchaux and directed and edited by vocalist/drummer Ben Ulitzka Portnoy, the video for ‘Sleep In It’ trades the band's fast-paced rhythmic cutting style for a more cinematic approach, exploring the underwater world surrounding the band's hometown of Manly.
Ben shares, "The original idea for the ‘Sleep In It’ video clip was to film us from a friend’s old fishing boat on one of the freestanding Wedding Cake lighthouses that sit in the middle of Sydney Harbour. We jumped off our vessel onto the white structure and climbed up to its 360-degree mini-balcony. 5 minutes into filming, our friends from the ferry tipped off the water police who promptly showed up to escort us back to shore… Luckily, there wasn’t much of a punishment, but unfortunately there was even less of a video clip.
In need of a new idea, we turned to Abijah (one of the guitarists in the band) and our friend Will de Monchaux (who filmed) are both eager ocean divers and a sea-life documenters. Growing up with the ocean as our playground, we sometimes forget how otherworldly that environment is. Initially, I wasn’t sure how this slo-mo marine setting connected to the track, but as I was editing, the partnership became apparent. Sleeping with the fishes, drowning, blissful escapism and disoriented weightlessness….”
C.O.F.F.I.N’s sound ventures through boogie, blues, proto-punk and early hardcore, driven by guttural lead vocals from behind the drum kit, high-voltage lead guitars and razor-sharp rhythms. Their music nods to the rich and raw lineage of bands such as Coloured Balls, The Angels and AC/DC, while filtering it through their own Northern Beaches lens, exploring ideas around Australian identity, community, environmentalism, injustice and the country’s connection with the rest of the world.
Having shared stages with acts including Amyl and The Sniffers, Viagra Boys and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, C.O.F.F.I.N’s relentless curiosity, work ethic and commitment to their craft has seen them evolve from a Manly Beaches upstart to one of Australia’s most respected contemporary rock’n’roll exports. The band’s 20-year DIY dedication has built a fiercely loyal global following across five studio albums. Their latest release, 2023’s Australia Stops, received an ARIA nomination for Best Hard Rock / Heavy Metal Album, alongside a National Live Music Award for Best Hard Rock / Heavy Album.
The new documentary 10,000 Miles From Oslo documents this 20-year journey, tracing the story from their teenage beginnings to their emergence as an internationally recognised act. Built from more than two decades of archival footage, interviews, unseen material and life on the road, the film offers an intimate portrait of the friendships, persistence and culture that shaped them.
At the heart of the story are decade-long friendships, from founding members Ben Portnoy and Abijah Rado, who began performing together at age 12, to later additions Aaron Moss and Steven “Kosty” Kostogiannis. Featuring commentary from family, collaborators and figures across the Australian music community, alongside live in-studio performances and early previews of unreleased music, the documentary arrives during one of the most significant periods in the band’s career to date.
The film will premiere across Australia, Europe and North America throughout July, August and November, with screenings confirmed in Melbourne, Sydney, Berlin, Austin, Los Angeles, New York City, London, Manchester and Oslo.
Select screenings across Australia, the UK and Norway will feature Q&A sessions with C.O.F.F.I.N and director Jake Laderman.
